FRIDAY: Top Tape at Hyperion Tavern (Silver Lake)

Come get reel to REAL with Dublab’s analog-obsessed Top Tape gang. Aural Standards will be there alongside music-minded beings like Matthewdavid, Frosty, Walter Gross, Jonwayne, Low Limit, Sun Araw and, if we’re lucky, AS fave DJ Crazy Scotty Str8 From Rehab (these are examples, not promises). All sexy cassingles are invited to mingle to this mix of ambient haze, screwed rap, fukt folk, and experimental freakiness (1941 Hyperion Ave, 90027). On FB.

We DJ tapes. FREE FUN for you.

Feature: Dublab and Goethe Celebrate German Music, from Krautrock to Kraftwerk and Beyond

Dublab meets ze Germans, fine tunes abound.

Though the kick-off already passed, there’s no reason not to get to know the Goethe-Institut (which has offices all over the world) via my recent article in the L.A. Times. The focus is the German cultural institute’s team-up with Dublab, a local non-profit music collective and internet radio station with a similarly international reach. The just-passed event inaugurated the launch of nearly two months of streaming Teutonic tones over at Dublab.com. Read about it here.

Tonight: Dublab’s Top Tape at Hyperion Tavern (Aural Standards Spinning Cassettes)

The official Aural Standards cassette rig (click for full view).

It’s going down at the Hyperion Tavern in Silver Lake tonight. Dublab’s Top Tape monthly starts at 10 p.m., and the DJ (CJ?) list is strictly sign-up. All cassettes, all night. It’s usually a mix of East Side music-makers (folks like Sun Araw, Matthewdavid, Walter Gross, Speculator, Jon Wayne and, on occasion, Money Mark) and wannabes like me, spooling out the sludgy, time-warped jams for all to enjoy. Ever hear “Kiss From a Rose” on Promethazine? Try it.

Friday Night’s Set = Na$ty New Jack @ Top Tape (Hyperion Tavern, Silver Lake)

All cassingles. All New Jack Swing. All sex jams. (Photo by Matthewdavid)

“Why can’t we go all the way
to the top,the fullest extreme?
The sounds I hear when you’re with
me express the way that you feel.
And you say … uhh … ahh.”

Had the extreme pleasure of spooling (like “spinning,” but with cassettes) at Dublab’s Top Tape night at the Hyperion Tavern on Friday night. So did amazing folks like Walter Gross, Jonwayne, Speculator, Matthewdavid, Frosty and DJ Crazy Scotty Straight from Rehab. Me? Gil DeVoe? Eh?

These aren’t the exact vrsns, but a great (the best?) way to begin the week:
