* “Blacc’s ’60s soul recreation of ‘Billie Jean’Β  lends significant gravity to the classic, slowing things down considerably and adding mournful horns to the mix.

Live In LA: Coathangers, Surfer Blood Dominate Echo Park’s Waved Out Fest

On Saturday, the Aquarium Drunkard blog threw an all-day indie rock gala at the Echo and Echoplex. Sixteen bands on the rise (local and otherwise) dropped in to deliver solid sets that went well into the night. Surfer Blood was the main attraction, but the Coathangers slew the competition, which was a stiff mix of excellent acts like Superhumanoids, Active Child, Best Coast, and Gamble House. Photos and full review here, via LA Weekly.

Here’s another outtake of Crook Kid Coathanger in action.

INCHES002: More local revolutions w/ Mayer Hawthorne, Frankel, Vibes, Polyamorous, more

INCHES002 is up! The second installation continues on the same L.A.-centric path as the first, exploring five additional releases from five different local artists on five different nearby independent labels (with free MP3s). The releases are chosen with an eye toward both content and outward packaging.

This week’s gold medal-winner:

Mayer Hawthorne, Just Aint Gonna Work Out

Mayer Hawthorne, "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out"

Featured in INCHES002: Mayer Hawthorne (Stones Throw), Vibes (Not Not Fun), Frankel (Autumn Tone), The Polyamorous Affair (Manimal Vinyl), and Bipolar Bear (olFactory). Again, future installments will include reviews, interviews, guest bloggers, outings, and more.
